My Son

Dear Son, my aspirations are to be your hero
I know that when you look at me, you'll see a man, a friend, the opposite of a zero
I want to be your role model, the example you follow
A man that'll show you why you should never be hollow
Remember, I'm merely a man
Sometimes I'll cry and you'll ask why but in them moments you'll be too young to understand
A man who cries is still a man, everybody has feelings
Ima do my best to help you reach for the stars when you feel like you're stuck at the ceiling
Son, be wise in your choices
I can give you wisdom and I can give you love but only you can decide if you'll follow other voices
Your decisions will come with consequences and some with rewards
But those will make you a man and give you something to work towards
As a man and your father I will love you
And you may feel weird with me saying that but I will say it cause I didn't hear that from my dad
He could say everything that he wanted but sometimes failed to say that
But because of this, I will make it my duty to tell you no matter how much it may embarrass you, make you look soft, make you look weird
Cause I still want you to say you love me after you've gotten married, had your own children and grown your own beard
I don't know you yet son and I don't know when you will get here
It could be years from now but I will always remember this promise to you and keep them dear.

Jay Beech, I remember reading your poems some time ago and thinking how I wish you would present more, more often. Glad I caught this piece. Loved the authenticity and realness. One

I knew there had to be that heart-felt emotional kernel in this piece Then this happened: "As a man and your father I will love you And you may feel weird with me saying that but I will say it cause I didn't hear that from my dad He could say everything that he wanted but sometimes failed to say that." That's when I found it and felt the whole work. I'm glad I found it. Peace
