Work Now & Work Later

Today is like most days,
Though on vacation, can't be lazy in my ways,
I'm stressed, thinking of emails and projects awaiting my return,
Emails daily on my corporate phone justify my concern,
I delete the repeats and forwarded email,
So when I get back next week, I'm not in "mail jail",
Work/life balance, at both I manage to fail,
Half here & half there, my mind and attention is shared,
Coloring with my daughter but still thinking about work, scared,
That I cannot disconnect, restricted, and addicted,
She's 5 now, and can tell that I am conflicted,
The latest fire drill isn't more important than you,
But if I don't answer it, they will find someone else who will do,
More work at home and with longer hours,
The workplace changed when they knocked down the twin towers, The powerful discovered that they could rule by fear, and companies demanded longer hours,
Then technology robbed us of our freedom at home,
Electronic leashes can outreach us, it's much more that a phone,
Did you get my email, text, and voicemail?  I see from your google location that you're at church,
We just need you to do some more work, on your Sabbath so our Monday's not worse,
What, you're going on vacation?   Who will do all of your reports?
Are you going to take your computer with you, and give us some support?
No?  That's fine, we'll just wait until you return,
You can do all of our work then, so it's no longer my concern,
I have a tee time, plus I've got all this extra bonus money (yours) to burn,
You work hard, and I get paid isn't that crazy Jason?
But we can't promote you yet, you're too invaluable our organization.
