as
Commander-In-Chief
my troops were all green
but seasoned veterans
raked leaves
swept the front sidewalk
washed dinner dishes
sometimes
a birthday request
or
found neatly wrapped under the tree at Christmas
gallant troops under my command
all green
yet
seasoned veterans
twenty-five to fifty
still
silent
arriving in plastic bags
carefully opened
placed in strategic positions in the back yard
or
the back porch
I could comfortably put them in harms way
they would topple over
as I would utter into the summer afternoon breeze
bang
boom
and they would fall into the dirt
brave soldiers
green
yet
seasoned veterans
all of them
gallant
efficient and brave
following orders from their
Commander-In-Chief
me
with silence and strict discipline
some days
the casualties were high
or low
depending on the mission
or
my imagination
frozen in position
awaiting my orders
until I returned from the kitchen
to finish a cold glass of kool ade
my Commander-In- Chief
issued general order number 5:30
to put the troops back inside the barracks
the original plastic bag they came in
to be placed under the bed
or inside the bedroom closet
all of them
those who fell
toppled over
would be ready again tomorrow for another mission
still green
all
still seasoned veterans
brave
disciplined
today
they are sent out in battle
never green
but brave
disciplined veterans
not placed in calm backyards or back porches
and if they fall
will be placed in plastic bags
not to return again tomorrow
or the next sunny summer day
I once was a Commander-In-Chief
over green
yet
experienced veterans
who would return the next day
wishing
they were all
GI-Joes
to return again
tomorrow
