Yesterday's Menu

maybe

if stars were aligned then
and my fingers were crossed
all my piggy bank coins
emptied into the wishing wells at the mall
clicking the red heals of my converse sneakers
closing my eyes
wishing
I were home with you

maybe

some moments would find us in the kitchen
at the dinner table
feverishly exchanging stanzas in notebook pads
tit for tat
holsters empty
shells of verbs
adjectives
nouns found on the carpet
quiet storm smooth grooves in the background
incense igniting the mood in soft misty clouds

maybe

in the kitchen
at the dinner table
a gluttonous glance
the menu would have been
you
five courses
could be more
toss salad
entree
gravy dripping on my shirt
I didn't mean to be so messy in my haste to
consume the evening meal
garnished with seasoned starches and vegetables
dessert
whipping whipped cream from my lips
sweet fruit fillings
and a wine paring for each course

maybe

after the
"itis"
sets in
we would get back to the written word
in its truth
in its lust
in its fight for the American way
words
leaping off of buildings in a single bound
fighting crime
hatred
the kryptonite being
another glance at you
sitting across the dinner table
and so begins the commencement of another five course meal

maybe

just
maybe

if it were
yesterday

and sometimes
yesterdays can be delicious
