the power goes out suddenly the bright city remembers what darkness is all about windows blackout one by one streetlights surrender traffic signals fall silent the skyline disappears we look up from our phones the battery is 50% the device needs power and the power is gone the sky was there the whole time now it too is gone no way to reach out how did we forget how to call when the phone goes dark we can't go live no way to broadcast that we're still alive we can no longer announce our existence or beg for help when we need assistance now we hope our neighbors in a time of danger are people we can trust we are strangers because we never talk to them and they don't talk to us yet suddenly they become the only people we can reach it seems none of what we learn about the light matters for long when darkness is sure to return we look for the light we search for the truth in our darkest hour we forget how to shine yet even a spark can teach the dark how to recede like water finding its way back from the shore the lights may return the phones will charge the skyline will come alive again but What is power if we have forgotten how to connect? What is power when we forget how to reconnect? we become the outage when we disconnect we can have a thousand contacts and followers and no one to call on a hundred neighbors and not know one name a world all around us and still feel alone perhaps the darkness didn't take our connection perhaps it only revealed how long it had been gone we step outside and we look at one another as if it's the first time we're seeing each other for the first time in a long time we look up from looking down a door opens a neighbor steps out someone asks “ARE YOU ALRIGHT?” and for the first time all night we hear a human voice out there that seems to care that we're still here that we're still alive the city has lost its gleam and it seems that we've temporarily lost our minds but perhaps we are beginning to connect to our power not the kind that comes through wires not the power that lights up a screen the power to reach out the power to listen the power to trust and help out a stranger the power to reconnect and beneath the darkened skyline the sky is waiting to provide a sign we forgot we need the stars the silent night the candlelight and perhaps the reminder that we were meant to align not shine alone we are our own source of energy we charge each other that's how we survive the zero hour "those who keep us in the dark forces our light to come on"
