Monster Underneath

It's funny how the fairytale changes

When you stop believing in the magic.

I'm not even mad anymore,

I just see you different.

You had that halo on,

I swear I thought it fit you.

You played the sweet girl so good,

I almost let you convince me.

You had me thinking I was crazy when I questioned your intentions,

Now the masks on the floor and I finally get the picture.

All them pretty little words had me caught up in the feeling,

But the truth got real ugly when I stopped ignoring the meaning.

You weren’t who you said you was, you just knew what I wanted.

And I loved the version of you that you carefully constructed.

Now I see the teeth behind the smile,

See the cold behind your eyes.

See the monster you been hiding,

Guess you thought I’d never find it.

I'm not crying at the ending,

I'm not begging for a sequel,

Fairytale turned nightmare

And the villain isn't who I thought she was.

So you can keep your pretty lies,

And you can keep that alibi,

I don’t need revenge

Seeing you clearly was enough.

The fairytale is over,

The castle burned down.

I took off my rose colored glasses

And look what I found now.

You had a mask on

I thought you were my angel

Until the mask fell off

And I met the real you.

I see the monster underneath

And honestly, she don’t scare me

Because if you wanna play that game,

Baby, I can be a monster too.

Don’t make me show you

What I had to turn into.

I used to lose sleep trying to figure out your distance.

Now I’m looking back like,

damn,

girl you really had me twisted.

You wanted all my softness but you played with my affection,

Now you’re shocked I got boundaries and a different kind of presence.

I'm not the girl you left behind

I'm not waiting by the phone.

You can keep whoever’s next,

You showed me everything

When you thought I wasn’t looking,

Now every little red flag

Looked like a warning I was missing.

See, I could’ve stayed sweet,

Could’ve stayed naive

Could’ve kept making excuses

For the things you did to me.

But you don’t get my softness

Just because you knew how to touch it.

You don’t get my heart

Just because once you had it.

Now there’s a side of me

You're never getting close to.

Not bitter, just different

And that’s what happens when I know you.

You wanted a villain?

Baby, don’t tempt me

Because I learned your language

And I speak it fluently.

Don’t push me.

Don’t test me.

You don’t wanna meet

The woman that you left me.

I was love,

I was patient,

You mistook that for weakness.

Now I’m calm,

Now I’m cold,

Now I know what you don’t know,

I don’t gotta hurt you

I just gotta let you watch me go.

The fairytale is over,

There's no happily ever after.

You lost the girl who would’ve loved you

And found the woman right after.

The mask fell off,

Now I see you for who you are.

No more making you a queen

When you never had the heart.

I see the monster underneath

And honestly, she don’t scare me,

Because if you wanna play that game

Baby, I can be a monster too.

But the difference between me and you

Is I know exactly what I am.

So keep the crown.

Keep the castle.

Keep your fairytale too.

I don’t hate you,

I just finally see you.

And baby…

That’s worse.
