The Thing That Got In The Way

I glanced at you
and you
glanced at me from across the office floor
but we each wanted more than an unspoken moment
in the middle of giving unto Caesar his daily yield
until after we clocked out at five
a thing removed
no longer getting in the way

got some answers on the low
had to know for myself
the who, what, when, where and why
the how
I would figure out myself
after running the numbers through my mental calculator
tabulating the results
to see if anything could
get in the way

she got a kid
about two or three years old
she is quite attractive
my spirit tek her
single woman, from what I was told
glancing at me for a moment
and whose eyes met mine
for the moment
not seeing anything in the distance
that could
get in the way

sticky notepad
scribbling something
like a work related accounting request
placed on her keyboard while she was away
asking respectfully
if she would be so inclined to have lunch with me
outside of the watchful eyes of Caesar
who would definitely make it a point
in the middle of our collective daily yield
to get in the way

sticky note on my keyboard
at some point while I was away
lifting some barge and
totin' some bale like old man river
cafe tomorrow at noon
and tomorrow
could not come soon enough for me to look across from her
glances becomes words able to be spoken aloud
to discover from her if anything
could get in the way

I was definitely her type
she tek my spirit
watched how I moved
and already asked someone else about the
who, what, when, where and why
accounting for
tabulated weeks ago
just like me
waiting for the how
to manifest itself
and if there was anything on my end that could possibly
get in the way

and there was
a thing
a locked door for which there was no key
like the safe in the back room
not authorized to know the combination
I would have to become her
or
she would have to become me
and there was no room for negotiation
although she very much wanted to
and we did tek each other
but there was this thing
an unmovable mountain
speaking to it would not make it
get out of the way

at some point
I will tell you all about it
but
that was years ago
and that thing that got in the way
got in the way
and I wonder if anyone in her future accepted the key
and entered her world
or
she would cross the threshold and enter theirs
did she just turn
walk back to her desk
discard all other future sticky notes
with the
whos... whats... whens... whys...
because the
how
would always be there to
get in the way
