A CINCO DE MAYO LESSON

CATEGORY

just different

Irony is like the arrow

of love piercing the heart;

likewise is celebrating

Cinco de Mayo:

If the French had won,

emancipation would have

been a delayed inevitable.

Ironically, America celebrates

behind walls of bigotry—

veiling the debilitations of you

who are hued just like me—

pitting us one against the other

in being free.

Check it out: they stole us from ours

and claimed your land as theirs;

made the Alamo a praised emblem—

shadowed by walls of triumph.

Celebrate if you must, but in God

you must put your trust.

The bank of justice remains on guard

when it comes to paying people like us.

Walls keep out as well as keep in;

woe be unto the USA’s

bordering walls of pontificating sins:

The Moors built much of the greatness

of Spain, but their glory is not given the same.
