The flames of a fire blaze
and flicker up and down
the line of their fuel;
In the furnace of my heart,
love’s flames are flickering
forever upward—smoking.
The salty waters of hate
teases love’s flaming blaze
but is evaporated smokeless:-
Thus is love’s warming eternal grace;
for wherever the flames of love abide,
hate’s filthy waters are forever dammed.
