maybe the next day

the next millennium
I will turn on CNN
because the evening's entertainment won't be courtesy of Mister Bojangles in blackface
or ten inch characters in plaids and pastels
puffy afros
ten inch platform shoes
I am gonna sit back in my recliner and watch the revolution
not the revolution Gil Scot Heron was talkin' about
but a different spinning of the planet
the times
they will be a changin'
like Bob Dylan said it would
a rebroadcast of
‘'War Of The Worlds'
but they can't blame me for the pandemonium
because I was sittin' at home in my recliner
watching the whole thing on TV
I look forward to the new day
because yesterday left so much to be desired
an unfinished work of art left out in the rain with colors bleeding through the canvas
the day before yesterday was hot
scorching my back as I worked all day in the fields
occasionally asking my brother if
12:01 a.m.
had arrived yet
and when it comes
the new day
will find you and I in places we never thought we would be
because God will shake this world upside down
like He was gettin' the last bit of frosted flakes from the cereal box
soggy bottom flakes
crispy
sitting on top of the bowl
it will happen
and I will watch the new revolution of the world from my recliner
after the ball drops at midnight
