The Way We Were

it was all so simple then
late at night with my typewriter
reams of schoolboy paper and black ink pen
and when the spirit moved me in the middle of the night
words were formed
I obeyed the spirit
and began to write
with beads of poetic sweat bouncing from my brow
an out of body moment
never understanding just how these letters altogether formed
fusing together words
sentences
quatrains in military formation
sometimes a haiku
and out of body experience
it just happened
there was nothing ever for me to do
the spirit offering
directing words to pen
remembering those times
it was all so simple then

the way I was
the way we were

periodic interludes of time
many moments of second looks
these things were all over my room
unorganized
later finding their way inside of hole punchers
inserted into different color notebooks
starting with the planting of one poetic seed
eraser and white out for corrections
and after each editorial read
only when the spirit was satisfied
someone else would sit down and peruse
reading these collections of words
phrases and haikus
like old Walter Cronkite on the six o'clock news
reading one page and turning back to it again
I wrote it
they read it
that is how it all transpired
and It was all so simple then

the way I was
the way we were

maybe I don't write as much
blasphemous actions against the spirit I fear
although typewriters now replaced by computer screens
my pen and paper are still near
but now
poetry has moved from the notebook and page
to snaps and applause on the competition stage
when did poetry need to be judged and choreographed?
when did poetry stop being simply read?
I still would rather write
than recite my work instead
old school writer of poems, I am
not much interested in the poetry slam
but it's cool if you do
I will take my seat and watch you do your thing
and at the end
judges will determine the nightly poetic queen or king
based on choreography
mode of dress
and less on what the words actually mean or say
I prefer yesterday
again and again
because it was all so simple then

the way I was
the way we were
