I used to be a painter I still paint but I used to paint houses my first job painting I worked for a painter called Smokey I never understood why because Smokey chewed tobacco I seen him light it up Smokey was a real character I never met a soul quite like his Smokey was good friend to me and I was a good friend to him before I could paint my job consisted of loading the truck unloading the truck laying down drop cloths setting up ladders picking up sweeping up mopping up cleaning all the equipment and washing all the brushes when the day was done I was called a goffer go for this go for that it was a joke that made everybody laugh but I didn't mind none because I knew one day I was going to get ahold of that roller and show 'em I can paint a wall better them all then one night Sam got drunk and called off the next day Sam was the cut in man he cut in all the corners then Smokey would come behind him with the roller after Smokey pitched a fit and called Sam a bunch of sum ma ma bishis he told me after I finish setting up start cutting in inside I was jumping for joy and scared as hell at the same time what if I mess up I'll never get my hands on that roller I took a deep breath set up the ladder clipped my Walkman on my side put the earphones on my head and told Alexa to play "I Got Work To Do" climbed up the ladder bucket and brush in hand mind on pro mode dipped the brush in the bucket stuck out my tongue ed it to side Smokey in the background "COME ON GET IT DONE I'M READY TO ROLL" I started to glide the brush in the crevice and feel the corner with color the world was gone and I was in heaven I don't know how long it took me to finish every corner of each room but when I was done the job was done and it was on to the next Smokey didn't fuss none so I knew I handled my business Sam sobered up and I went back to being a goffer on the next job I got my wish I been cutting in and rolling every since Smokey taught me how to roll better than them all
