A Mid-Winter Walk

The sun came out today

but kept back his heat;

the wind remained at rest

but let her chill freely flow.

The array of trees—leafy

and leafless—stood as still

as death himself.

Unperturbed little children joyfully

played their mid-winter games.

Nearby, two elderly men sat at a table

playing checkers, while on a bench

laid a young man covered

with cardboard, on which was a note:

“Homeless.  Please let me rest.  Thanks.”

Above in the bright blue sky, a flock of geese

in perfect Flying-V formation, soared Southward.
