Prism(Haiku)

The GIFT

Ancestral leg bones 

A mother grimaced 

as another of repeated 

rounds of pain 

washed over 

the young mothers face

Legs spread open wide 

showed promise

Undulating rhythmic contractions

Blessed the passage 

of the heavenly gift

A young prince 

delivered with pride 

A welcome sight

To the elder women 

of the tribe

Another soul upon which 

The Creator had bestowed a crown... 

Joy spread throughout the village

Celebration shared another soul 

to build wealth

Sent by the ancestors 

as a renewal for...

Drum Circle

None but the few

experience deep...

What it takes to be 

a natural drummer

no matter which culture

which vision, which color

more than picking animal skin

chosen for qualities within

dried and cured, when mature

stretched judiciously, tuned

being selective, adding tension

determining its proper dimensions

breaking in its soul, testing how...

its voice is carried in the forest 

its echoes climbing the wind...

to speak ...and be answered 

lovingly, gradually making it taut...

shaping its voice, testing its call

leading its talk, making it walk

weaving its stories with spirits 

in phrases of beings s...

Time... spoke to Space

opening before us

clouds and earth

but you don't need to die

What is legacy? to me... 

wealth and pleasure

personal treasures gained

in a loving partnership

looking back through my history

adding my tract

to all the other tracts 

of our ancestors

good, bad, happy, sad

every single One

to what i imagine 

they might have done

if i used my natural intelligence 

in the matter to determine

where would i fit in

if i were the one...

my ancestors did 

with what they had

that i've done 

spent or wasted

fought battles i'd thought 

i'd won, yet lost

victories i have blown...

As a young child, alone

i would hike many miles

on military reservations

exploring along unmarked pathways 

on trails which stuck in my mind, 

how to get back before dark

not just a walk in the park

never a care, How? Why? 

not quite defiance, 

self-reliance, perhaps

never a second thought

for what if... or what might

nothing i was taught 

prepared me for that

bring a young black child 

with a yearning to learn 

what i needed to know 

about animals 

with nothing 

but a natural sense of adventure 

as a driving force, 

a hope and a slight semblance&n...
