Just had to sit
when today
just by accident
I read this obit on the local news
a name that rang a bell
a name long put away in the attic of my life
dusted it off to read the inscription
peaked my attention
when the article mentioned that she was the same age as me
coincidence?
some would agree
the city of her passing was not the one we grew up in
but I kept on reading
and there it was
born in the same city
graduating in the same class
that was her
the one I crushed on the daily like
cold orange soda and chocolate chip cookies in the cafeteria
I would get to homeroom early
planting a poem
unknown
on her front row chair
staring from the back row while she read the each line with no expression
didn't turn around to look and see
who wrote to her daily love poetry
and the last I saw of her was in our green caps and gown
in my old hometown that graduation night
having her slowly approaching me after the ceremony was through
a whisper in my ear
bending down because she was a little small
thank you
I kept them all
then she walked away
and today
I just had to sit
when just by accident
I read this obit
making room in my attic
for the memory of my crush
