Cardinal

The cardinal rests on a branch
as I watch it looking back at me
It seems to be observing
the cage surrounding me
Snow falls silently in the background
and like a bright red apple on a bare tree
The cardinal insists I notice
that he is completely at peace
And as we stare at each other
I can clearly see
That the cardinal and I both know
that he is the one who is free

I met a man one cold winter day

thank god for this spring
I thought the cold had laid claim
to everything seasons bring
to who it is i became..
when I look back on things
what i see isn't the same
as I remember it seeming then
