I came into the world about the
Third week of 68 my B/C stated
Barely 4 months old
When Dr. King was assassinated.
Just a toddler when peace signs
Bell bottoms and afros
Were the hippest things ever
When the Shenandoah River and
Rocky Mountains were praised by John Denver.
We were tuned into Aunt Esther and Fred
Go at it time after time
While watching the asphalt grow
From 73 to 79.
In the early to mid 80s
When Grand Master Flash
And The Furious Five
Came with The Message
And White Lines
We rocked with Mike
Jammed with Prince
And been singing along with
Whitney & Luther ever since.
We grooved to the music of
Raw Soul aka Frankie Beverly & Maze.
While coming into our own,
You know that teenage phase.
I learned things about nature and
Ocean life I didn’t know
So Pop had us tuned in to Mutual of Omaha‘s
Wild Kingdom and Jacques Cousteau
By the time 86 came into play
Life decisions had to be made
So I learned how to fly solo
With some guidance from parental shade.
Now I’m a septennium more
Than a half century young,
And I’m sure by now you can see
The reason for the phrase
“And the rest they say is history”.
Now somewhere in the interim
Of all these great events
I learned how to use and arrange
My words so I could vent.
And after some time had passed
Not realizing the initial impact
It finally dawned on me that
It’s what kept me intact.
My mission became clearer as
I continued writing page after page
So if someone were to ask me,
No, I don’t have a problem with
Tellin’ my age.
I never did.
