Hours of Operation

When you have a business or even go to a business establishment, there are “Hours of Operation.” Meaning, a time from which the business is open, until the time they close.

As the owner of a business, you decide which hours you want your business to run. For example, if you have a hair salon, and you list your hours of operation between 10 am to 6 pm, then those are your hours of service.

Here’s the problem I want to address. Why is there a cutoff time before the cutoff time, when the cutoff time should be exactly at the closing hour listed.

I’ve seen this happen even with most government offices like City Hall, or the DMV… where there are no new tickets or numbers given out and no walk-ins will be seen within the last 30 minutes or so.
That gives the staff time to finish with those already in there waiting within the last 30 minutes.

Now let’s talk about some restaurants as well. And when it comes to restaurants, the hours of operation applies the same here as well, especially here. If the restaurant is open for business from 10 am to 10 pm, then there should NOT be a problem if a guest comes in at 9:50 pm, because it is still between the operating hours.

However, in some cases it is a problem with the staff, servers, and or cooks saying they are wrong for coming in “this” late.
Some people feel like those people won’t get the best service or the best food coming in 10 minutes before closing, but is that fair? Might I add, it is still during the hours opened.

To me, if you want to be done, cleaned up, everything put away, floors swept, mopped and out the door at the same time you are closing, (which we all know, that is not possible), but in order to be done and out the door at 10 pm, then you need change your hours and close at 9 pm, to be finished on or before 10 pm.

Or, if you close at 10 pm, you should at least state on your hours of operation that the kitchen closes 30 minutes before the restaurant closes, and no new orders will be taken after 9:30.
That can prevent someone from driving 20 minutes to get there and be turned away and refused service even though they got there during your hours of operation listed.

What do you think? Are Hours of Operation really being effective?
Do you feel cutoff times are fair and reasonable before the actual closing time? And tell me, what is the purpose of Hours of Operation if it comes with restrictions, regulations and stipulations? Also, should those restrictions be listed on the website?
