They say the city teach you
how to breathe in the ash.
It teaches you how to pray
with your back against a brick wall
and your pockets full of yesterday’s promises.
Morning smells like coffee joints
and the greasy hymn of the corner grill.
The subway hums like an old saxophone,
a low moan that keeps the rhythm
of folks hustlin' through the dawn.
We move in the same beat —
two steps forward, one step sideways,
one prayer tucked in a sneaker.
Mama raised me on thrift-store Sundays,
soft gospel and harder truths.
She said, "Boy, keep your head low,
but keep your heart loud."
So I walk with my heart loud,
footsteps on cracked sidewalks
shouting back to the sky.
We got stoops that double as altars,
neighbors that double as kin.
Old man Reyes with the paper bag wisdom,
little Tasha with the big laugh — both saints.
We share grief like we share light:
hand to hand,
cup to cup,
you breathe, I breathe, we breathe.
We rise by the same small rebellions —
keep the baby smiling,
patch the roof before the rain comes,
teach the kids how to say their names loud.
But listen —
sirens write law in neon,
money writes nouns before we get to verbs,
and some nights the stars feel like borrowed coins.
Still we move,
still we sing with chipped teeth and good intentions,
still we fight with the softest fists — love.
Justice don't come dressed neat.
It comes muddy, slow, and stubborn.
We meet it with loud mouths and longer prayers.
We march with grocery bags and babies,
we chant with tired lungs and new songs,
we demand tomorrow like it's rent overdue.
Love lives in our elbows,
in the way we pass a joint of hope,
in the way we give our last slice of pie,
in the way we forgive ourselves for being human.
Pain lives in the same room,
sits in the corner, drinks our coffee,
but it don’t own the jukebox.
So tonight, under flicker of streetlamps,
we recite our names like scripture.
We hold the city’s hurts like holy books,
and read aloud the parts that say:
we are here,
we are hungry,
we are enough.
One more breath.
One more song.
One more step.
We rise.
We rise again.
