Concrete Gospel

Listen — the street hums like a hymn, neon prayers in the gutters,
and the city keeps the beat of our heartbeats,
steel-toed rhythms stamping out the silence.
We learned to speak in sirens and dollar bills,
to baptize our dreams in corner store light,
to plant seeds in cracked concrete and call them crops of hope.

You grew up with yesterday on your shoulder,
a mixtape of old fights and lullabies your mama whispered
when the rent was due and the lights were low.
She taught you how to stand even when knees shook,
how to lace courage like boots and walk anyway.
Remember that. Remember she kept the grocery bag open
and closed her eyes so you could see more than hunger.

The grind is loud — it calls your name in the morning,
pounds on your door at midnight, offers you fame in a paper wrapper.
Do not take the wrapper for the meal.
There are folks with silver smiles who sell shortcuts like gospel,
but shortcuts only change the map — not the destination.
You want the mountain? Pack your spine. Walk up. Carry somebody.

There will be backstabbers dressed as brothers,
poets who sell your lines back to you with a different rhythm.
Forgive them — not because they deserve it, but because your soul costs more
than the weight of their envy.
Cut them loose like old rope. Use the space to swing.

This is the homework: grow taller than the block can measure.
Be a pulse that wakes sleeping neighborhoods.
Teach the kids how to read the sky not the scoreboard.
Show them how to bank on faith and compound it with grind.
Plant seeds of respect, love, loud laughter that shakes the stoops,
songs so true the pigeons stop to listen.

When night comes heavy and your pulse feels thin,
close your eyes and hear the Concrete Gospel: you were made to rise.
Not tomorrow — right now. Put one honest hand in front of the other,
and move. We are more than what the pavement says we are.
We are a chorus that will not quiet, a promise walking,
and the city will learn our name.
