I am running water on a beatless tune, trying to find my way. And all of the promises of my youth are shattered dreams, scattered like ashes. Who told you that you could strip me of my dreams? Who told you that it was ok to kill me? Did I volunteer my body as a signature for your practice? Over taken by my flaws, and you have placed a target on my back and deemed this decree as "necessary force." While I am just a person with dark skin, pain written in my melanin. Strong features in exquisite darkness, I look into the mirrors and love who I am, and you cannot stand the sight of me, but you alter yourself to look like me? These are dark days that we live in and I just want to belong or maybe not, maybe I want to stand out, because if I belong then I am broken. We are free, or are we? We are never really as free as we think that we are. I smell the traces of whips and chains from long ago, we are so far but yet so close and our society claims to be " accepting," Or is this denial? With police brutality and lynchings that the eye cannot see. In 10 years where will we be? You beat me down and then shout at me for barely surviving. Forcing your psychological heroin into my brain, you are killing me softly and just silent enough for no one to notice for generations. Shredding any amount of dignity that I have left. Taking my darkness and bleaching away my identity, until nothing remains. I just want us to be strong and heard not silent and broken. I want this exquisite darkness to be seen as a masterpiece, not hidden in shadows full of pain in my melanin. I am not the minority, you are! And this is why you are afraid.
